Governor Adams has died!

Monkeykid (JIN): In an announcement that has saddened all right-thinking citizens through the MRA and across SimNation, it was announced today that Governor Obadiah Adams has died.

A period of official mourning will culminate in a state funeral Friday, announced the Governor’s son, Senator George W. Adams.

Governor Adams had served as Mayor (later Governor) of the MRA for a record five weeks, since he was elected to succeed Bell Kinte following her death in office during week four.  He was instrumental in the Revolution and bringing Monkeykid to the heights it has reached.

As hard as it is to conceive of a world without the Governor, life must move on, and one of the most obvious ways is in elections for a new governor.

The True Whig party has already announced that Assemblyman Gareth Sanchez, the Governor’s heir-apparent, shall be their nominee.  Neither the Progress or RDF parties have officially announced their candidates, however there is widespread speculation that C.B. Jackson may choose to run, which may prove a more difficult race for Sanchez than imagined by many.

Rumours also have it that the RDF may nominate someone from outside the governing cadre.  Speculation has centered on Dr. Marley Beare and Haile Selassie Adams, of this newspaper, although both have denied any interest.

Roundtable: The Next Governor?

It is no secret that Governor Adams is elderly and will not be with us much longer, perhaps not even surviving until the end of week nine.  Speculation has already begun as to who might be his replacement.  The Journal-Intelligencer’s political roundtable weights in:

It is hard to conceive of a world without Governor Adams!  But yes, such a sad day is coming, sooner than we would like.  For me, the only choice is the Governor’s heir-apparent, Assemblyman Sanchez.  He has the wisdom and experience to continue the policies of Governor Adams and the True Whigs and ensure the goals of the Revolution are successful.  I think he wins in a landslide over any candidate Progress puts forth.

I agree with Peter that Sanchez is the likely nominee from the True Whigs, although I could see Senator Adams enter the race as well to allow three generations of Adams’ men to serve.  C.B. Jackson would be a formidable candidate from Progress, but his age is sufficiently concerning that the party may choose to go younger, perhaps with one of their young stalwarts like Assemblyman bin-Fahd.  I don’t see the RDF putting forth anyone.  A race between Sanchez and Jackson may surprise us.  I could see Progress pulling it out.

Sometimes you have to question conventional wisdom, but I don’t see this being one of those times.  Whigs and Sanchez all the way.  Book it.

Bill approved!

MRAAB1, Uthman bin-Fahd’s bill to legalize prostitution in the MRA has passed the MRA Assembly and has been signed by Governor Adams into law.

The Assembly voted along bipartisan lines, 5-1, to approve the bill.  Zaynab B. Jackson (True Whig) who was the only Assemblyman to vote against the bill, remarked that while she did not oppose the bill in concept, she had certain reservations regarding the registration requirements, thus prompting her vote.

Bin-Fahd, speaking afterwards, was pleased with the outcome:

Removing shame and reducing victim-less crime are positive things.  Now, woo-hoo workers in the MRA no longer have to hide in the shadows.

Although now legal, sources tell the Journal-Intelligencer that no permits have been applied for to open the first brothel in town.

Watch the little green men

Aliens have been visiting us, and abducting us, for years, yet the government still does nothing about it.

This might have been expected under the old regime, but surely Governor Adams, himself grandfather to a hybrid, knows these alien visitors are not our friends.

I learned that lesson the hard way when I was abducted and impregnated against my will with half-alien spawn.  And if I love my hybrid daughters, I don’t love how they came to be.

We must take action to prevent further abductions and ensure future generations can search the constellations in peace.

New bill from bin-Fahd

ub-progMonkeykid (JIN): Assemblyman Uthman bin-Fahd has introduced a new bill in the MRA Assembly to legalize prostitution.

In addition to legalization, the bill would mandate registration, testing, and security.

Although long tolerated in SimNation, if this bill passes, it would be the first time a regional authority has legalized the practice.

My reasons for introducing this bill are two-fold.  One is to stop the hypocrisy of sims condemning practices in which they take part.  Secondly, it ensures criminal elements are kept out of the MRA.  Sunshine is the best disinfectant and this is an area long overdue for disinfection.

When asked for a comment, Governor Adams abstained.  Under his father, the True Whig party would have opposed this bill, but the Governor is known to have a much more laissez-faire attitude when it comes to social issues.

Roundtable: Hon. Jane S. Ruben

Recently, Gov. Adams made a surprise appointment by naming the Hon. Jane S. Ruben to the Supreme Court.  Many were shocked by the choice given that Ruben lacks any legal, law enforcement, or security training and had spent most of her adult life working as a UFO Researcher and housewife. Some say she is grossly unqualified for the position and obtained it only because she is a former lover of the Governor.  The Journal-Intelligencer’s political roundtable weights in:

In my opinion, the naysayers are ignorant trash.  Once again, Gov. Adams has made a wise selection.  The reality is that Monkeykid simply did not have the formally-trained legal minds to fill the ranks of Judgeship, forcing the Governor to make less traditional choices.  Having known Jane for many years and long respecting her intelligence, I applaud this choice.

As a recent emigrant to Monkeykid, I have not had the pleasure of knowing the Judge.  While on the surface it is clear why some might find the choice odd, Peter’s point is an accurate one.  Prior to the Revolution, Monkeykid had little indigenous legal needs.  With devolution and the requirement of self-governance, it was a certainty that some initial appointments might be less than ideal.

I think it wise to trust in the decisions of our leaders and based on everything I know of her, I am sure Ms. Ruben will be an excellent jurist.

I like the move.  Jane is a thoughtful, educated woman with good sense and she clearly possesses the necessary skills to be a wise judge.  Yes, in an ideal world, the Supreme Court would be trained jurists, but since that was not yet possible, Gov. Adams made a smart decision.

And I’m not just saying that because she is my mother-in-law.
